Bali oil painting is a process to draw a picture on media (canvas) using a pigment with a help of drying oil medium. In early of modern europe, the medium is linseed oil.

The technique on bali oil painting is traditionally by start making a sketch on the media / canvas. The painters sketch the object using charcoal or thinned paint. And then oil painting mixed with linseed oil, turpentine or thinner. The chosen of the media to use for dilution affect the speed of drying time.

The basic rule on bali oil painting is fat over lean, which means the additional layers must have more oil to allow proper drying. If we put less oil on the layers, the end result could make the painting crack and peel.

  1. Always lay your oil paints out on your palette in the same order so that, with time, you'll be able to pick up a bit of a colour instinctively.
  2. Use basic rule fat over lean. If top layer is dry faster then lower one, the painting can be cracked.
  3. for underpainting or sketching avoid using ivory black because it dry slower
